Another imported car with a British licence plate under the new U.S. plate.

Too old to be a current style licence plate or a perfix licence plate so will be a suffix licence plate.

Here you can see the ‘E’ which means it was registered between 1st January and 1st July, 1967 vehicle.

As the DS was made between 1955 and 1975, this' ll be one of the last DSs made.

A few references indicate that France lets classic cars use a black license plate with white lettering. It’s possible that it’s just a coincidence that it ends in “E”. However. my knowledge of European plates is abominable, so I’ll trust your expertise.  

The tail lights and turn signals are the European versions, so it isn’t one of the few sold in North America.

It would be a Series 2, 1963 - 1967, if it’s the same one seen here.

Ye’, many of them are.

Some would of been registered from new in the U.K. and LHD and some later registered in the U.K. after being bought on the continent.

While the U.K. is RHD, you can buy LHD (home buy LHD as they work in the continent but live in the U.K.) o r RHD from new and there’s no 25 year rule either.

As long as it meets U.K. standards (sometimes with a couple of mods, such as a mandatory rear foglight) your okay.

Having lived in the UK, I can tell you that LHD cars are quite rare there and any LHD cars in the UK usually came from the USA (like the MGB I imported into the UK).

The French normally used the German derived DIN1451 font and rarely had a number next to a single letter without a space. The plate looks to end in ‘9E’.

Later France used a font similar to the U.K. Charles Wright 1935 font. But still had letters in pairs or threes, numbers in pairs or threes, with a space between each cluster of letters or numbers.

The U.S. imported (used) ones tend to be sold around U.S. bases here in the U.K., while new cars like the Chevrolet, Cadillacs, etc... common around Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, London, etc... areas where new U.S. cars have either a ‘prestige’ as being something different or the owner wanting to stand out.

But LHD cars aren’t as uncommon as you think here in the U.K. certainly more so with Polish nationals having to register their LHD cars here if they reside here for more than six months, etc... also we get some Spanish and Italian cars from when U.K. expats, who lived abroad, bought a car there, then moved back to the U.K. rather than the hassle of trying to sell the Spanish car in Spain then have to find a way to bring all your stuff back, simply drive it to the U.K. with all their belongings, sell it in the U.K. (often taking a £500-2,000 loss on if it was a RHD, then buy a RHD for convenience of driving now home.

Cheaper and rust-free in TX.

I eventually sold it to a German. I think he took it back to Germany, so it ended up with the steering wheel on the appropriate side.

You have a good point. They are dirt cheap here in the south even for an entirely rust free example and a medium quality older restoration one will run you like 6k all day.

But why did you go through all the trouble of getting a lesser version with an inconvenient wheel placement? The UK ones weren’t compromised by bumper height regulations and other US laws.

Not trying to bash your decision but I suppose I've just always considered the home market ones to be better.

When I bought the car, the steering wheel was on the appropriate side. Then I imported the car to the UK when I moved back there. I bought a ‘74, which wasn’t significantly compromised by bumper height regulations: it had the “Sabrina” overriders, but not the raised ride height. It had twin SU carbs, not the later Zenith-Stromberg carbs.

I my experience, having the steering wheel on the wrong side is a minor annoyance. I have a significant amount of experience of this.

I sold the car for at least what I paid for it, plus my cost of having it shipped. I don’t recall the exact numbers, but I think my net cost of ownership was close to zero.
